Doula Training

Doula work is exciting and incredibly rewarding! You have the opportunity to change worlds. A mother who views her birth in empowering terms is more confident overall, helping her be a stronger individual, which in turn positively impacts on her relationships and family.

Carolyn Tranter has a Diploma in Childbirth Education, is a DONA International Certified Birth Doula, and a DONA International approved Birth Doula trainer. She has been working as a doula and Childbirth Educator since 1990 in New Zealand, Australia and Fiji and has provided birth and postpartum support to well over 100 families.

Carolyn is the Founder and CEO of Baby Beginnings and is committed to helping DONA International meet its mission of ‘a doula for every woman’.

Her experience and knowledge, along with DONA International’s comprehensive program, will give you all the confidence and training you need to work in this rewarding career.

Birth Doula Training

Are you interested in a career working with mums and babies? All through time, and in all cultures, women have been supporting and mothering other women at the time of birth. Doulas encourage, soothe, and educate. You do not need to be a mother yourself, nor have a medical background to become a doula—just a passion for birth and parenting and the desire to be in a support role for mums

Certified doulas are typically self-employed with independent doula practices (we will give tips on how to do this). However, many women interested in maternal/infant health have found doula training and certification a valuable stepping stone into a future career in midwifery.

You may already have the heart of a doula—enhance your skill set with this hands-on training!

Topics include

  • comfort measures and pain relief techniques,
  • creative positioning for labour and birth,
  • support strategies for normal and challenging births,
  • essential communication and advocacy skills,
  • and much more…..

This comprehensive workshop fulfils one step towards becoming a DONA International Certified Birth Doula. For the list of pre-requisites necessary to attend this course visit the DONA International website at: http://www.dona.org/

Postnatal Doula Training

Research evidence shows that the quality services of a Postnatal Doula can ease the transition that comes with the addition of a baby to a family. The postpartum doula is committed to the belief that support and care of a new mother and her family, during the early postnatal period, has long-term beneficial effects on the mother’s physical and mental health, and on her confidence and competence as a parent. By mothering the new mother at this critical time, the postnatal doula helps to strengthen the entire family unit.

A Postnatal Doula

  • Offers education, companionship and non-judgemental support during the postnatal fourth trimester.
  • Assists with newborn care, family adjustment, meal preparation and light household tidying.
  • Offers evidence-based information on infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, infant soothing and coping skills for new parents and makes appropriate referrals when necessary.
  • And much, much more…

This course has been approved by Doulas of North America (DONA) International and is taught by a DONA approved trainer.

This DONA International approved workshop is a three day comprehensive program designed for the novice or experienced doula looking to be certified. Students that participate in and complete the program will be extremely well prepared to meet the needs of families during the postpartum period. Attendance at this course constitutes one step toward becoming a DONA International certified Doula.
